What Is a Cacao Ceremony? A Grounded Guide for the Curious (and the Skeptical)
What actually happens in a cacao ceremony — the tradition, what you drink, what you feel, and what it is not. An honest guide with no hype.
If you've been invited to a cacao ceremony — or you keep seeing them mentioned and part of you is curious while another part rolls its eyes — this guide is for you. Both parts of you are welcome here. Honestly, the skeptical part usually asks the best questions.
First: what a cacao ceremony is
A cacao ceremony is a guided, intentional gathering around ceremonial-grade cacao — not the sweetened cocoa of your childhood, but a minimally processed preparation of the cacao bean that has been used ceremonially in Mesoamerica for centuries.
The drink is warm, dense, slightly bitter, deeply comforting. Around it, a ceremony gives shape to something our lives rarely make room for: slowing down, arriving in your body, and feeling what's actually there — with company.
What it is not
Let me clear the air, because the internet has not been careful with this:
- It is not psychoactive in any dramatic sense. Cacao contains theobromine, a gentle heart-opening stimulant related to (but much softer than) caffeine. You stay fully yourself, fully present.
- It is not a substitute for medical or mental-health care. Ever.
- It is not a performance. There is no way to do a ceremony "wrong." You don't have to cry, share, or believe anything. You just have to arrive.
If you have heart conditions, take antidepressants (especially MAOIs), or are pregnant, check with your doctor first — ceremonial doses of cacao are stronger than a cup of cocoa, and your safety is part of the ceremony too.
Where this tradition comes from
Cacao's ceremonial history runs through Mesoamerica — through Olmec, Maya, and Mexica cultures, where cacao was sacred currency, offering, and medicine long before it was ever candy. That history deserves to be named, not vaguely borrowed. This work stands in respect and relationship to those roots, not in costume.
I grew up in Sonora, in northern Mexico, and part of what this work means to me is holding it in a way my culture would recognize as honest: with respect for where it comes from, without inflated claims about what it does.
What a circle actually looks like
Every guide holds ceremony differently. In my Cacao & Healing Circles, the shape is simple and unhurried:
- Arrival. You're welcomed into a small circle — seats are genuinely limited so every person can be truly held. No experience needed, ever.
- The cacao. Ceremonial-grade cacao, prepared with intention. (For virtual circles, I send a simple recipe and sourcing notes ahead so you can prepare your own cup at home.)
- The guided practice. Grounding first, always — then gentle, guided heart-opening and energy work. You'll never be put on the spot.
- Space for release. Sometimes tears, sometimes laughter, often both. Everything that surfaces is welcome; nothing is forced.
How it feels in the body
Most people describe some combination of: warmth spreading through the chest, breath slowing on its own, shoulders dropping away from ears, and emotions surfacing gently — the ones that have been waiting politely for weeks.
Some people feel a lot. Some feel simple, quiet calm. Every body responds in its own way, and every response is the right one.
Is a ceremony right for you?
Circles are most people's first doorway into ceremonial work — intentionally small, beginner-friendly, and low-commitment. They're a beautiful fit if you're curious but cautious, if you've been carrying things alone and your body misses being in community, or if you simply want one unhurried evening where nothing is asked of you.
If you'd rather understand what you're carrying first, start with the 2-minute Energetic Pattern Quiz. And if you're ready to sit in circle — virtual or in person in Boston — reserve a seat. When a date is full, it's genuinely full.
Cacao ceremony is complementary spiritual practice, not medical treatment. Please consult your doctor about cacao if you have cardiac conditions, take MAOIs or other interacting medications, or are pregnant.
